Welcome to Brisbane Ultimate
Lots of new people seem to be finding out about Ultimate Frisbee in Brisbane at the moment, and finding this little website on their way.
So welcome to the Brisbane Ultimate Disc blog. Here we talk about ... Ultimate Frisbee in Brisbane. We do a range of news, views and just plain silly stuff, depending on the whims of the main poster. Yes, there's a few in jokes, and on occasion it ventures well beyond the limits of Brisbane and/or Ultimate Frisbee. Don't take it too seriously.
Here's the real info you need to get into Ultimate in Brisbane at the moment.
Ultimate is an easy, cheap and fun way to get fit.
New Leagues are starting all over Queensland, and in most cases new players are always welcome and able to get onto teams. Just get in touch with the organisers. You can usually learn on the go!

QUTies beat the world
Ok, maybe not, but they did get the bronze medal in division 2 at uni games. Not since, well ever, has QUT done so well. Some people have suggested that it is the first time in many years that neither Jangles or I was involved, so success was a sure thing, but I disagree.
They were beaten by a New Zealand team (even though it says AUSTRALIAN uni games, geez guys get your own competition), and what looked like a hybrid team (how was that legal?). So pretty much, QUT won div 2.
Reece Stewart apparently came second in MVP voting (first loser Reece, how do you feel?), while James Hood was named "most stupid looking player". True.
Just plain Awesomeness!!!
With the wrap up of the season QUTies were left with an empty trophy cabinet, again. I place the blame Ben for not being able to catch a disc thrown by an Australian. Lets hope those Canadians throw them backwards so he can't drop them.
Despite his many drops and what i believe mas some mass delusion(and probably many sexual favors) Ben was named as the Div 2 MVP.
Now i can retire happy after taking out the DIV 1 MVP. I would like to thank the ABC for putting spicks and specks on wednesday nights so i could play on mondays, Nomis boots it is my hope if i promote them enough to get sponsored and finaly all those people who voted for my awesomeness.
Mediocrity, Awesomeness and Pretty Okay.
It has been brought to my attention that over the past few months, a worrying trend of mediocrity has been finding its way onto this very website. Now although, in the past mediocrity has been somewhat of a trend as such for QUT Ultimate, it is with great relief that I announce it to be a problem of the past.
Monday night saw the conclusion of the pool games, and with it a victory to a highly underrated Quties team. With this victory we can unofficially claim our first winning season, research has indicated that this is perhaps a result of star recruit Johnny mac. However, at this point in time this research has proven inconclusive, and for John to confirm the research, he will be required to play next season with the Quties.
Aside from our general radial awesomeness, I am unable to elaborate further on the successes of the team, as unfortunately I still dont really know whats going on. But from what I can gather, aside from Ben (obviously, and also the author of many mediocre posts) we did pretty okay.
Now all of you support your local uni games team. Just Frisbee though (sorry Cadi, although seriously basketball at uni games, seems odd to me). And just QUT (including John).
Cougars maul the QUTies
Haha, I'm getting the hang of this title stuff.
First of all, well done to everyone for tonight's game (for interested readers, we went down by 1). Our flow in attack is quite impressive, and the points we scored came about as a result of good, hard running. Special mention tonight to James and Michael for their hard running. Kudos to Matt and Stef for coming to support the team, even though they were on their death bed.
So I don't overload you, let's take two things out of tonight's game to improve on:
Attack: As John said, be confident in your cuts. There were too many hesitant cuts, where we would take 3 steps forward, and then decide that we couldn't get the disc. Keep running, and you'll beat your man.
Defence: We will need to work on this on the weekend. If we are running a fence (and hot tip, we normally are because I like having someone on the mark), then the other 3 people are in a line sloping slightly upfield the way that the mark is forcing. There were quite a few double teams tonight.
In other news, Dean has lost a leg, so he should be out for 1 week, and I have had to have my hand amputated. We have an impressive injured list at the moment:
Dean- dodgy knee
Stef- Breast implant recovery
Matt- dodgy knee (same as Dean, they were doing something weird in bed together, so they have the same injury)
Ben- Dodgy wrist (probably the most serious of the lot, but I battled on regardless. The Courier Mail has called it 'The most inspirational moment in sport').
As always, read and comment.
P.S. After many complaints, I feel that I should report that we won our last game 10-6. I was busy during the week guys, geez.
Well done Space Needle
QUT alumni Mike Nield has done himself and his former uni proud with his effort at the world games in Kaohshing, Taiwan. Mike was selected in the 13 man/woman mixed Australian Crocs Team to compete at the games.
Mike walked away with a bronze medal, plenty of stats and a spirit prize to boot. Join me in congratulating mike!!

Uni Games Training
Training Starts This weekend for the long road to uni games.
Where: Marchant Park, Chermside
Ellison Rd side of the park.
There is a carpark opp Boulter St that you can park in.
time: 3pm-5ish
cost: free
Bring: waterbottle, boots and frisbees
Heroes get the axe
Ha ha, get it. Like the tv show, except not. Electrifying stuff.
I should probably start off with the apologies; Michael (teeth pulled because a drug deal went bad), Stef (breast implants), Dean (something about missing Canada- he was on the floor crying), and Cris B (had to have it explained to her again that touching little kids is bad). If I missed anyone, let me know.
First of all, I was really impressed with everyone's individual efforts tonight. Lots of hard running, hard defence, and tough catches. MVP would probably have to go to Courtney, who returned like the prodigal son (in this case a daughter) to the frisbee field.
What impressed me tonight was the long up the line throws that never looked like missing (Cadi and Matt in particular). It takes confidence to first of all throw it long, but also with a small margin of error that comes from being on the sideline. We also didn't freak out when we got to the endzone- there were very few throwaways.
Well done to the guys tonight, who played savage, particularly Matt and James who had to put in most of the hard yards. Well done also to Sam who played with what looks like a broken hand (probably not the best idea to lash out with the boot when you are in a tight fence Paige).
Thanks must go also to John who continues to give us little pointers, and occasionally even throws a good throw :)
I really don't have too much that we can improve on, if you think of something, leave it in the comments.
The winning streak is over
Well, the longest winning streak in the history of the world is now over. We were beaten 8-7 on the last point.
We did some really good things tonight. There were some good points, and pretty much everyone played in most positions. I also liked that we weren't throwing the crazy inside out backhands instead of forehands!
Where we fell apart was our organisation. There were some times there where we could touch someone else on our team, which means that we were too close to each other. We'll work on positioning in training.
Special mention goes to Cris who played tonight despite having either the swine flu, or the plague.
There were also apologies vefore the game- Sam Bird (herpes), Cadi (deportation), and Jmac (gang related arrest).
P.S. James begged me to mention how many times he scored. I will not.
.... And the winning streak continues!
QUTies women have had yet another win! QUTies won 15 - 2 against rival university team UQ! It was a fantastic game with both teams only fielding 6 players.
Next week is the grand final, QUTies are not in the gf unfortunately! Thanks for a great season girls!
Winning streak continues
Two in a row for the QUTies, which I am pretty sure is a first for this team.
We welcomed back Captain Canada this week, who looked like he had become a much faster athlete with his bi-annual haircut. His return also meant that we had a sub, which is always a positive in a game :)
I think most people had a go at handling, which is the only way we are going to improve our throws. It may feel uncomfortable at first, but handling makes it easier when you drop back into a cutting position, and you can look up the field and be confident in your next throw. Michael is definitely going to be playing more handler until he stops having a cry about it :)
Special mention tonight goes to Stefanie who I believe scored 2, and got plenty of disc in the meantime. Samantha's forehands are also getting better, with one even sailing over the endzone when she put a little too much juice into it. What is happening now is our positioning is getting much better, and that is why we are all getting more of the disc.
I was also extremely impressed with our defence- there were plenty of blocks, and that is what is winning games for us at the moment.
In terms of lessons for next week, I believe that you should all take a look at one of my throws. It was a perfect throw from John to me just outside the endzone, Paige was positioned perfectly to receive the pass, and I threw it into the ground. If you want to learn what you should be doing on a frisbee field follow me around and do the opposite. Geez.
In other news, James missed tonight's game because he was in New Zealand. I believe he needed to shore up some drug deals, and as he said "New Zealand is known for its hookers." True story.
Farwell Ryan
Thought i would put a post in to say good by to one of our numerous internationals who is heading home via cairns in a few days. Ryan has entertained us with on field slips and off field hooliganism. I know the Netball girls showed him and his sister around town and bogan teacher clare gave him lessons in proper aussie. It was a pleasure to have you around ryan and your welcome back any time.

Well great turn out from ExQUisiTe with only one person missing (simon). QUTies had their new recruit as their only hope for a victory. and then there was reece and the stealthy sophie from div 1.
So it went down like this rock up to a push button door that opens to reveal a group of eager players who beat me there. We then proceeded to play arcade games for about an hour waiting for everyone to show up. We were able to work out i suck at driving games being beaten by john on daytona and alex on sega rally, clare sucks at shooting games relying me to keep her alive in area 51 and the motor bike game is nothing like riding a real motorbike according to USA Mike.
We then went through the mission briefing to hysterical laughter when we were told no foul language. After a quick debate as to the reason you need 2 hands on the gun we went into a standard 3 team game which was won by my team Yellow with top scorer being Ryan.
We then jumped into a stealth mode game i think which saw Kev make an appearance and show us all how to play, easily topping the score sheet. Not to mention Stealth sophie hiding in every possible dark corner.
Other notable metions were Myself surviving being track by the Terminators Kev, John and Megan just long enough to win for the humans and John coming from behind to pip kev in the final showdown of the elimination game.
Id have to say MVP was John topping most of the games and always being around the next corner. Winning Team had to be ExQUisiTe due to shear weight of numbers.
Fun, pizza and booze was had all round and there will be another get together probably as a end of season bash!!!
QUTies win!
I couldn't think of a cool title, so I went for the obvious one.
QUTies, after three seasons of trying, have finally won a game (the addition of Johnny Mac may have helped a bit).
I had a good think after the game, and the best thing that I could see was our defence. In a game that we won 11-2, we received the disc 3 times off a pull. So the other 8 points we got were because of hard defence. From memory (and people commenting can correct me), Paige, Sam, Michael and myself all got handblocks. James got some long blocks (he doesn't like catching the disc). That was where we won the game. Our offence was understandably smoother, but we had our chances because of our defence.
Special mentions tonight go to Michael for his massive D (even though he cried like a girl afterwards), Cadi for her excellent cuts, and James for his 5 or so points. Also to Johnny Mac who suggested a winning formula (getting me as far away from the disc as possible).
Next week I think we should muck around with our handling line a bit. I liked the fact that everyone had a go in every defensive position tonight, and that everyone had a go at a pull. Next week I'd like to see everyone have a go at handling- not only will it improve your throws, but it is good to see an ultimate field in front of you with everyone running, it teaches you where the space is.
Poor effort from Stef, Cris B and Matt, who had other engagements (like studying for exams). Uni is only important for your career. Research has shown that frisbee is better for your entire life- it makes you more attractive to the opposite sex (what's better than throwing a disc at a girl and then saying "if you played frisbee with me you could have caught that"), and there are rumours that god himself is a frisbee player. I'm just saying.
In other news, ExQUisiTe and QUTies div 1 also won. According to the club historian (who may or may not be Jangles), that is the first time that it has happened.
No games Next Week
No BUMFL Next weeks as there is a public holiday. Yes confusing as that is i for one will accept this chance to further recover from many injuries.

QUTies women win 12 - 9 !!!! Are the guys the weak link?
(2) Comments - View | PostHow important is the score anyway?
As you may gather from the title, the QUTies went down by 3 to ExQUisiTe in a tight match at the frisbee field tonight. After all the talk before the match, ExQUisite showed up with their A game (their A game is to get Jangles as far away from the disc as possible, which seems to work)
It was probably one of the highest skill levels I've seen in a div 2 match. There were great long catches (James), brilliant dives (mine), and humiliation in the end zone (mine). Indeed, Jangles scored on me in the 2nd last point by using my head as a launch pad.
In terms of the game by the QUTies, I couldn't fault anyone's efforts. There weren't too many points where someone didn't touch the disc, which suggests that we are playing more as a team than we have in the past.
The only suggestion that I have is in regards to popping. Their zone was excellent at closing when we were crashing through, but we can't be worried about running into them. You don't want to smash into them like I did, but don't get shut out by them.
I enjoyed the longer throws from everyone tonight, so kudos to Sam for bringing that into training.
Special mention to Paige who returned from Youth Nats in Newcastle, and to Dean who will be leaving us for 2-3 weeks.
Fame for QUT Ultimate once again
Following my MVP down at Uni Games, and my win at the 'Get your disc out" competition, many people have asked themselves "what else is left for QUT?". "Can they once again scale the lofty heights that Ben has reached?"
Well, the answer is yes. Paige (QUTies member) was part of the winning Fresh Fries team down at the eastern portion of youth nats in Newcastle this week. Furthermore, Paige was named one of the tournament MVPs. It has been suggested that she is a better ultimate player than me, but I'm sure that is not true.
Apparently Paige is rushing back tomorrow to try and get to the grudge match. As she has said "Since I won youth nats, I'm sure I'll be able to play all over Jangles. He's a chump."
The question that is left is whether a sibling partnership has given more to QUT Ultimate than Paige and I? I have conducted a poll of everyone in my room at this point in time, and the answer is no.
Game Back on
Well Ben will say that i have been doing a rain dance 24/7 and have spent the last 24 years of my life researching cloud seeding just for this day. However the fact is QUTies are going down and there is nothing that ben can do about it. Bring on the grudge match and may the best endowed man win.
In the word of the late great big Kev
"I'm Excited"
Jangles manages to get frisbee called off
Bit of news in the Brisbane ultimate scene.
The first grudge match between QUTies and exQUisiTe has been called off due (apparently) to sodden fields. I have a source, however, that says that Jangles has been begging Notty all week to call the game off, because he doesn't think his team is up to the task of taking on the QUTies. I can't blame him, really.
So, no game tonight, and we are not sure whether we will get a rematch (if it is left up to Jangles, we probably won't).
In a precursor to the grudge match, Jangles and I played each other yesterday, and needless to say he came off second best. The green goblins have bruised his hand, and apparently he is unable to hug his teddy bear at night like he usually does. I'm sure everyone will send him our condolences.
QUTies v Fresh Fries
Hey guys,
So last night was reasonably good. There were some improvements, and alot less dropped disc during the night. There were two points where our offence flowed really well, and scoring points was easy. I also though our transition from zone to man defence was much better than it has been in the past.
The main thing to remember is to think about what we have done in practice. I was guilty last night of not dropping off the guy with the disc to go and mark the free guy in the end zone, so it is harder than it seems. Also, you can't get to a free space and just stand there, because all that is doing is blocking the lane for someone else.
As a final thought, our warm up needs to improve. If we are going to do it, we need to do it well, because it gets our heads in the game. Warming up in a jumper means that you aren't putting the effort in. If you drop the disc and laugh about it, you will do it in the game as well. It's actually better to not warm up at all, rather than doing it in a half hearted way, so we need to think about that for next week.
Anyway, next week is the first grudge match between QUTies and ExQUisiTe. I assume we will win, purely because any team with Jangles is destined to lose.
BUMFL Season 2 starts 18th MAY
Rego is now up for season 2 on the afda website register yourself now.

Well after getting our hopes up result we corrected and we need a win to garentee a spot in the final next week. Despite a valiant come back from 9-3 we were unable to peg back enough points to level the game. Final Score was 10-8 with plastic booking their spot in the final.
UGlies now need to hope chimis went down to UQ last night and survive on points difference.
The team has developed well through the season and i look forward to fighting it out with you all next season.
ExQUisiTe Continued their success with an upset win against a hard running Bermuda. No idea where this puts us on the table but i know it is ahead of QUTies :p
QUT Uglies Make Div 1 final
So through an act of God or just my excellent captaincy, The Uglies have topped the table with a week to go and thus are eying off the trophy. It has been almost a year since a QUT team took out the monday night comp and i have been having some withdrawl symptoms.
I dont think QUTies will make the div 2 final but ExQUisiTe may have a small chance almost rolling league favourites dyspnoeics on monday night.
QUTies v Poachers
Guys, good game.
It seems weird writing that since we didn't play to our full potential, but we didn't do too badly. To put it in perspective, there was one guy who plays for the Brisbane team, and has played lots of US college ultimate, which is a crazy high level; one guy who has been playing for years and is good, and a girl who could walk onto any girls team in the country, and who regularly holds her own against the guys in the BPL on Thursday nights. So to go down by a handful of goals is not bad.
Just some quick things to think about. Our transitions weren't great again, but that was mostly my fault. I should have been calling way earlier what we were doing, and sometimes I would just forget and do my own things, which is ridiculously stupid of me.
Secondly, we had trouble moving the disc tonight. Part of that was a bad night on behalf of our handlers, but there were few options from the poppers. You really have to run hard into the cup to get the disc. A half hearted attempt is nothing.
So the positives
1. I really hate to say this agin, and it's becoming a common theme, but Stef played really well. It actually hurts me to say this since we are mortal enemies, but she more than anyone else was getting through the cup and getting the disc. Those of us who have played before can see the improvement in her game. Just to make me happy, you suck Stef.
2. James is repeatedly our best player. It is annoying as a more experienced player to have someone come in and play better than me, but that is what he does. Paige is also really great in defence. You are still the only girl who uses her legs to defend.
3. Matt got his first foot block, which is a great moment. Michael played with more confidence, which was great. (By confidence, I don't mean to throw a 20 metre forward into the wind when you are marked by 2 people lol). Both of you are really picking up your game.
4. Sam had a few bad throws/catches and it got to her. Everyone throws bad throws, everyone drops things they should catch. It's how they come back from those that determine the game.
5. Finally guys, I feel that all of us are listening better. It was really noticeable tonight that Mike and Kerrie didn't really listen to what the play was, and were caught out a few times. We are all developing not only individually, but as a team as well, which is the most important thing.
See you next week.
QUTies v Mellow Yellow
Guys, best game ever. We were down 4-0, and if it wasn't for a brain explosion in the last 2 minutes we could have won.
So, let's start with the negatives, not that there were many:
1. Our transitions from zone to man, and from offence to defence, were diabolical. Like, possibly the worst ever. Alright, maybe not, but they were bloody awful. Ultimate is a hard game, and one that doesn't reward hard work most of the time. You may have completely burnt your guy long, but if it turns over, and you are not marking up, you lose the game for your team. Simple as that. Run hard on offence, but run even harder on defence and get to your man.
2. We need to learn where to stand when there is a force on. Most of their goals were from shitty, open side points, that they had no right to score. The easiest way to remember this is that if we force to a sideline, you stand on that side of your defender. Give them 2 metres, hell, give them 5, but do not let them get on the sideline side of you, or you lose the game for your team. It sounds harsh, but that is the way it is.
That's about it guys. If we get to the game early like we did this week, we can practice forcing.
Now for some positives.
1. Great game by everyone, and I mean everyone. There was not one person that I looked at tonight, and thought, they had a crap game. Well, except when I look in the mirror.
Cris D'Arcy: Good cutting as usual, and a safe option when you were a handler. Be confident enough to call yourself on. If you can see someone is tired, tell them to get off. You are one of our best players, but you spend a good portion of the game on the sideline. GET CONFIDENT!!!
Cris B: Awesome game. It was great that you told us handlers to get it to the cutters. It's hard when you play handler to see what the right option is, so scream at us.
Cadi: Aside from the fact that I still blame you for everything, great cutting again. Alot of the fast movement that resulted in us scoring was built off the cuts that you and the 2 Cris' created.
Paige: You weren't as lazy this week. You have good field sense, and once you get fitter, you'll play all over the girls in the comp.
Sam: Safe as always. It's hard for girls to play handler when they put a zone on us with a big guy on the mark, but you never panicked. Some great catches off some dodgy throws from me.
Stef: As much as it pains me to say it, I can see the improvement every game. Better cuts, and I don't think you threw it away at all this game. Really well done.
Matt: Some good connections up the side of the field, and you tend to have a knack of getting free when you need to. Be confident in your throws. There were times when you were free on the forehand side, but didn't want to throw it. You are good enough to make that throw.
Michael: Moment of the game- Hammer to me. I was laughing the entire time that throw was coming. It was great. You're another one that needs to be more confident. I have seen you throw 20 metre long forehands, but when someone is marking you, you try to do some crazy inside out backhand. You could throw a forehand 5 metres with your eyes closed, so be confident.
James: I don't want to say that you cost us the game, but let's face it you did. 4 points??? I've scored 4 points in the first 3 points of a game. Pick your act up. Also learn what I mean when I say your name. "James" means to run long. "James" means to run short. "James" means to pick up the disc. It's not that hard. Seriously though, good game. i'm happier with your defence, because you shut down their long game. After the first few points, they didn't bother throwing it long, because you were there. You personally changed their entire game plan.
Me: WORST. PLAYER. EVER. On the brighter side, I don't think I abused anyone tonight, which I think is a positive :)
Guys, I think we need to improve our throws. I have this crazy idea that in order to do that, Sam and I are going to come out of the handler line, and people like Michael, James, Matt, Cris X 2 and Paige will have a go at handler. So get your throws better for next week's game, because that is my evil plan (insert evil laughter here). Subject to approval from Sam, of course.
Yeah guys. Let's win next week, shall we?
QUTies v Heroes
Alright guys.
First of all apologies for letting the frustration show on the field tonight. I'll work on being more calm next week :)
Ok, so let's start with some negatives, and then go into the positives.
ATTACK:
There was plenty of dropped disc tonight, including one shocker by me, which was complete crap. It's to be expected in windy, rainy conditions, so that's not really an issue. The dodgy passes came from rushed throws. We are used to playing a zone, where up to 4 people are free, so getting passes to them aren't a problem.
There was plenty of man tonight, which changes the game. The stack becomes all important. The handlers have a mark on them, so sometimes they just won't be able to get the disc. We need crisp, quick cuts from the stack to really open up the field. Tonight most of us seemed to only be cutting at 60%. Whether that was the rain, or confusion as to what we were doing, I'm not sure.
We have to really drill into ourselves what we do in each situation. The opposition will only ever set up 2 defences on us- zone or man. Zone, we will have three handlers to initiate the dump-swing, 2 wings, and 2 poppers. Man, we will have 2 handlers, and the rest will be in the stack. Write it out 100 times. Man- stack. Zone-positions.
For next week, that will be the plan. An issue with me tonight was every point I was repeating that same tirade, which aside from the fact that it must have bored everyone, no doubt people got sick of hearing my voice. Next week, I won't give a speech at the end of each point. when the disc comes down and the defence sets up, I will call zone or man. I apologise for the constant drone of my voice.
DEFENCE:
We seriously have to transition better. Just because we drop the disc does not mean that we have lost the game. Get your head up, and get a mark on. Tonight, when we dropped it, people were always out of position. This can be put down to my dodgy organising at the start. The fact that people didn't know what they were doing on a turn was my fault. I was trying to get people to work on so many things, I don't blame people for getting confused. Something that I will work on next week.
Now, for positives. It seems funny that in a game where we lose so comprehensively we can have positives, but we do. Our girls are easily the best out of any div 2 team. Seriously, most of the time other teams wouldn't even know their girls' names, because they aren't involved in the play. In many ways, our girls are our focal point. The two Cris' continually get into space, and it is more the handlers issue as to why they don't constantly get it. Stef and Paige, both first season players, have picked up the game faster than anyone that I've seen. Sam pretty much never panics. It is so refreshing to see a girl handler. Most of the other teams shove their girls out of the way, but we don't do that.
Matt has a good read of the disc, which doesn't normally happen so quickly. I play with people that have played for 3 or 4 seasons that repeatedly go the wrong way when the disc is in flight, but Matt doesn't really do that anymore. Michael will be a good player once he learns to not push people in the back! (I counted 3 times tonight) Even though he doesn't particularly like handler, he is getting better at it every week.
Big thanks to Adam for filling in the void left by James, who, rumour has it, missed tonight because he was caught in a compromising position with a male hooker. I'm not joking, I had to post the bail. Adam had to cope with his first game that was in the rain, against an experienced team, when we weren't really on our game. Well done.
Ben "Gets His Disc Out"
Well ever the opportunist it seems Ben has done it again. he has some how turned a trip to the chincilla melon festival into $100 cash just by holding up a parade. Well done Ben and the rest of the QUTies crew. Now all we need is discs anyone want to degign one??

Well let's start on the most unflattering point. We went down 6-4 against the fresh fries, but to be fair it was 5-4, the hooter went, we dropped it in the endzone and Piers through a length of the field huck for them to score, so it could have very well been 5-5.
Now the good points.
Excellent game by everyone. There was a massive improvement in the stack this week. When I dropped back to handler it was great to see a nice straight line, with individuals (rather than the whole team), making cuts. The reason it seemed like the game flowed more this week (even though it should have been bogged down because of the rain), is because those cuts were so much better. Great work, we'll continue that next week.
In terms of individual efforts, there were some exemplary ones this week. Paige made some great cuts and good catches, so much so that the opposition made special mention of her in the circle, and one of the national youth coaches came up to her and commented on her game. Michael and James had some great connections that resulted in points, and Michael's first foray into handling was largely a success. Matt once again used his speed to great effect, and his throwing is improving every week (except for his long range forehands). Sam was her usual calm self at the back, and it was great to see Stef and Cris B so tired from their constant cutting. They got the disc a lot more because we gave them space this week.
Great work guys. The only thing that stops us from winning games at the moment are the throwaways. We just need to calm down, take our time AND NEVER THROW A RISKY PASS.
Also, hammers are awesome.
See you next week.
Round 2 for Div 2
QUTies Div 2 got underway again after a bye last week. We played a UQ team that looked suspiciously well experienced for a 2nd division team. Even though we lost 9-3, we can all hold our heads high.
We did some really good things. More involvement from James Hood saw the team steadily make their way up field, courtesy of his high grabs. Matt and Michael combined with some great mid length throws for a point to Paige. There was also a hammer throw to Matt to score, which was a high point. From memory, the handblock this week was the first one we have done, so that was good. There was a massive effort from the cup tonight that kept UQ down their end for much of the point.
Some negatives. There were a few throwaways that were unnecessary. My laser guided forehand straight into a UQ player was an excellent example of this. But we are a developing team, so these are to be expected for a little while.
The main thing we have to focus on is to get the stack straight. The two Cris' can cut well, but they were largely stopped tonight because they had people in their way every time. Next week, we need to get in a stack straight away. Focus on:
1. Stand right behind the person in front of you.
2. Know the order that you are cutting in.
3. If the person before you doesn't get the disc, it is your go, and you need to go [bold]hard[/bold].
4. Cut back toward the end zone, and then turn around and run toward the disc. It is really important that if you don't get the disc, you need to get out of the way. Keep running past the disc, or head to the sideline, but get out of the way!
We'll work on that next week.
Well done guys, even though we were closer last week, I think we played better as a team this week, against a better opposition.
Woohoo!
QUTies get a week off
No game for the QUTies this week, with div 1 being called off due to a lack of fields, while the div 2 team have a bye.
No doubt we will all be training hard instead :).
Next week should be interesting with most of the div 2 team coming back from the Chinchilla Melon Festival. I'm sure hangovers will be abundant, similar to uni games.
BUMFL Gets Underway!
The QUTies div 2 season got underway on Monday night with a tough match against the experienced Bermuda Triangle.
The team was short staffed with Cris, Cris, Cadi, and Court all pulling out with weak heart muscles. Just joking, but I did start a rumour that one of you is pregnant, and that's why you couldn't play. Try explaining that one to your parents. The new recruit Snoopy apparently showed up but couldn't find the team, which was unfortunate. I'm told that he will be coming next week. We'll all be wearing large neon signs for you to see us, Snoop.
So it was left to Captain Courageous Sam B, who was ill with the plague, Ben, and the new recruits. We also picked up super sub Megs. We kept pace with Bermuda Triangle for much of the game, with pressure on defence resulting in lots of turnovers in our favour. In attack, we dump/swing very well; Stef, Michael and Matt were standouts in coming back to help the handlers get rid of the disc. James Hood, the 18'11 (seriously, I'm not exaggerating) behemoth was outstanding in his ultimate debut, pulling down difficult long passes, most of which were dodgy because they were thrown by me. Special mention goes to my little sister, Paige on debut, who also played the entire Div 1 game. Jangles assures me that she is already better than me (I'm sure he's joking). Bermuda scored on the buzzer, with the final score being 7-4 in their favour.
There were times on Monday night where we played free flowing ultimate that is good enough for us to beat most of the other teams. The most important thing is consistency. We would do some awesome things, with length of the field connections, and excellent timed cuts. Other times our defence would let our man go, allowing easy metres. Two of their goals were scored because the mark was forcing the wrong way, resulting in an easy point.
All in all though, considering we were chumped 14 and 15- 1 in most games last season, there has already been a massive improvement. Peoples throws are more stable, the cuts are coming at the right time, and we are not throwing the disc away. Looking forward to next week, guys.
Div 1 Wrap by Jangles
Had a successful start to the season grinding down the chimichangas in a hard fought game. with most players playing in div2 games for various teams prior to the main show the team was well warmed up and required little inspiration. With brief glimpses of brillance on offence and the take no prisions defence that has become a trade mark of all QUT teams, we came out on top.
This was the first win for both Ben(playing 6 months) and Paige (playing 2 hours) to form a highly successful sibling patnership.
Monday Nights Start tonight
With some creative recruiting we now have 2 teams in the monday night league. The div 1 team headed by myself aims to take the QUT name back to the winning circle with a star studded line up.
The div 2 team headed by the beautiful Sam Bird, are bringing new meaning to the word QUTies. They are looking at continuing the good form that they showed at the end of last season.
Div 2 will play at 7:20-8:20
Div 1 at 8:30-9:30
Both at annerley junior soccer club.

Thanks to all the team that came down last night to play in the rain. It was a cool and wet evening ideal to play some tough ultimate. Unfortunately the bye meant we didnt get to play. We had a full team down there just and the girls were lucky enough to get a game playing for heros as they were short girls. Well donr to Mel(Canadian one) and Carissa for playing your first game of BUMFL savage.
Anyway the team is looking good. Shame there is only 2 or 3 QUT student left on the team. Despite this i think we have a good chance of reviving our glory days. Keep your eyes on this site for more draw info and ill put the maps up for the fields as well.
